Intrastate Motor Vehicle Registration Requirements
Many businesses operate within Ohio, and as a result, intrastate vehicles must be insured with a commercial vehicle insurance policy. According to the Ohio Public Utilities Commission, an intrastate vehicle transports cargo between two points within the state. These vehicles fall into two categories: private vehicles (transporting company-owned cargo) and for-hire vehicles (transporting goods owned by other companies). All for-hire vehicles are required to have a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN).
A CPCN is obtained through the Ohio Public Utilities Commission and must be renewed annually. As part of the renewal process, businesses must submit information about the vehicle insurance for each intrastate vehicle. Private carriers, however, are not required to obtain a CPCN.
